Curcuma Longa

PROPERTIES

Turmeric contains potent antioxidants known to protect against environmental stressors, due to its powerful anti-carcinogenic compounds. It is soothing and gentle on reactive, delicate skin while also being mineral and antioxidant rich to provide nourishment for that sensitive skin that needs a bit of extra love. Turmeric is effective in the treatment of acne due to its antiseptic and antibacterial properties that fight pimples and breakouts to provide a youthful glow to your skin. Not only does it help clear acne scars and inflammation, but also reduces the oil secretion by the sebaceous glands.

HISTORY

Turmeric has been considered an important part of Indian culture for at least 4000 years. It was one of the first and most important spices in the Silk Road spice trade and because of its widespread use it has over 50 names in Sanskrit and is known all around the world by many more. Most commonly it is known by its Latin name, curcuma. This can be tricky because there are over 100 curcuma plants worldwide and most of them are known locally, grow in rain forest climates, and have similar medicinal uses but the turmeric that we typically think of is Curcuma longa.

Imparting an aromatic, earthy scent with a slightly bitter and peppery taste, turmeric has played a role in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for more than 4,000 years to treat stomach ailments, improve blood circulation, and heal skin wounds.
