Copal

copal resin

Bursera fagaroides

PROPERTIES

A glowing, radiant color and complexion to the skin is dependent on the abundance of nutrients and a well-functioning circulatory system. Copal is known to stimulate blood circulation, and thus can improve your complexion. Copal is used medicinally in Guatemala to kill fungal outbreaks because it is an antibacterial. It is also an astringent, which works to tighten the skin, and is therefore great in face toners.

HISTORY

Copal has been used traditionally by the Maya in Guatemala for burning during sacred ceremonies and is believed to purify the air and spirit. It is a resin similar to amber with a smoky, sweet aroma.

LOCAL SOURCING

The organic Copal we use for Tierra & Lava products is harvested from trees in the Uaxactun village and Mayan site of Guatemala (just behind Tikal).

In the Mayan village of Uaxactun, the main form of income  at the moment is harvesting Xate which pays $8 per day.  This is what Dominga Bo does when the weather is favourable.  Working with copal pays almost double – the result is a 90% raise in income if there is demand for that much copal. The capacity and resources exist to scale copal harvests by more than 100x  providing more Uaxactun women with work. As we grow, we plan to connect  Uaxactun to new markets for copal, such as incense blends which are increasing in demand.
